Levan Stepanyan grew up among artists in picturesque Old Tbilisi in Georgia. He graduated from the Tbilisi Art School, the Tbilisi Toidze College of Fine Arts and the Tbilisi Academy of Art, studying both two-dimensional media and sculpture. In 1994, political turmoil forced the artist to immigrate with his family to Israel, where he became a prominent figure in painting and design.
Stepanyan’s distinct strokes result from the application of layers of color to the canvas with a palette knife. This technique, also utilized by Impressionist painters, results in a multifaceted coalescing of color and texture that transforms when viewed from a distance.
Stepanyan’s figures display sculptural qualities reminiscent of European Cubism and indigenous Georgian monumental art. His genre compositions capture everyday moments of contemporary living, but the abstraction of figures, simplification of surroundings and hazy texture suggest emotional distance, an outsider’s view of an alternate reality where the subjects’ motions are stretched and slowed in time.
Stepanyan’s work can be found in private collections in Georgia, Russia, Israel and the U.S. and in Baker Street, a prominent gallery in the artistically rich Old Jaffa district just outside of Tel-Aviv. His solo exhibits include “Routine” (2009) and “My Illusions” (2007) at the New Gallery Institute of Art in Bat-Yam, Israel. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions including “Imagination,” (2010) the Israeli Art Exhibition Sale for the Benefit of the Israeli AIDS Task Force in conjunction with Bank Hapoaliim in Tel Aviv, “Spring Still Life” at the Migaldor Gallery in Old Jaffa and “60 Years of Israel” (2008) at the Talpoit Museum in Jerusalem. Stepanyan is a member of the Israeli Professional Artists Association.
